David La Mar opened Ames Bicycle Barn in July, 2012 to provide nice-looking, high quality bicycles at affordable prices to people who want a good deal. While being trained at the Des Moines Bicycle Collective, David noticed you have to have at least $500 in your pocket to walk into a bike shop just to purchase the least expensive, newer entry-level models. He thought if he could buy used bicycles, clean them up, make the appropriate repairs and sell them at bargain prices, people would appreciate it.

Used Bicycles: Our inventory changes day to day. We carry all kinds of bicycles – road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrids and racing bikes. Some are priced under $100. Some cleaning, repair and reconditioning has been done in many instances. As with any purchase of a pre-owned bicycle, customers are encouraged to get each bicycle inspected for road worthiness and safety. And, of course, all bicyclists should wear helmets for safety.

Buying Bicycles: People typically want to know what their bicycles are worth. This cannot be accomplished over the phone. The price depends on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, condition, age, degree of disrepair, damage, make, model, size and style. Bring it by and we’ll take a look. Sellers are asked to provide a current photo i.d. with contact information, phone number and current address. If receipts, bills of sale and owner’s manuals can be provided, these items would be very helpful.

Selling Bicycles: We have the best prices for used bicycles in the area. Stop by and check us out. Take one of our bicycles for a test ride. We think you’ll like what you see. You’ll definitely like the money you save.

Trading Bicycles: Customers have the option of trading in their bicycles and receive credit toward a newer or different model. This, again, depends upon the same factors mentioned in the “Buying Bicycles” section.

Consignment: We will be happy to consign your bicycle for you on our website. There is a 30% fee for this service. We will post a photo of your bicycle on amesbicyclebarn.com and call you when an offer is made. The minimum purchase price for consigned bicycles is $500.

Payment: Cash, credit card, or local check with a current photo i.d. accepted.
